School Traditions

The Most Iconic Traditions at Clemson University

Clemson University may have been founded in 1889, but its traditions run deep and remain vibrant across campus. Whether it's hearing the roar of Memorial Stadium from your Clemson off-campus apartment on a Saturday or rubbing Howard’s Rock before kickoff, these customs connect generations of Tigers through pride and community. Here are a few of Clemson’s most iconic traditions to help you get acquainted with the university!

Howard’s Rock and The Hill Run

If there’s one tradition that defines Clemson football, it’s Howard’s Rock. Located atop The Hill in Memorial Stadium, the rock, gifted from Death Valley, California, first arrived on campus in the 1960s. Before each home game, football players rub the rock for luck and sprint onto the field, an electrifying moment known as "the most exciting 25 seconds in college football."

The Tiger Walk

Game day starts early at Clemson. A few hours before kickoff, the team arrives by bus and walks through cheering fans toward the stadium—a tradition known as the Tiger Walk. Fans gather, the Tiger Band plays, and students and alumni offer high-fives and encouragement, creating an energizing pregame ritual.

Solid Orange Fridays

Every Friday, students, faculty, and alumni proudly wear orange to showcase their Tiger spirit. Whether it’s a shirt, hat, or entire outfit, wearing orange symbolizes unity and school pride. Even the town's streets feature painted orange paw prints, welcoming visitors and reinforcing Clemson pride.

The Clemson Ring Ceremony

Eligible students (typically juniors and seniors) receive their Clemson rings during a formal ceremony presented by the university president. This ceremony symbolizes academic achievement and deepens students' lifelong connection to the Clemson family.

Bowman Field and the Snowball Fight

Though snow is rare in South Carolina, when it does fall, students gather on historic Bowman Field for an epic snowball fight. This spontaneous and memorable tradition highlights the field's importance as a central gathering place, which also hosts student events and relaxing study sessions year-round.

The Alma Mater After Every Game

Win or lose, each football game concludes with the singing of the alma mater. Players, coaches, and fans link arms and sway together, reinforcing the values of loyalty, legacy, and the collective love for Clemson University.

Clemson’s rich traditions help students feel part of something larger and create lasting memories. These moments not only define campus life but also make Clemson truly feel like home.
